Fran's Autumn Recommendations for Kids

If you were to ask me, any time of year is perfect to cuddle up with a book – but there is something about Autumn that makes reading even more appealing. When I look back to my own childhood, there are certain books that still sing of certain seasons in my mind and any that feel truly like Autumn are filled with nature, cosiness and colour. Here are some of our recommendations to create a gorgeous, cosy Autumn memories for your little ones, or even you!
Peep Inside Autumn (with flaps)
This is a delightful book, celebrating everything in the wild world at this time of year. I still fill my pockets with conkers at 41 years old, and this book depicts all the natural treasures of the season with simple but lovely text and lift the flap illustrations. I enjoyed it as a book-based tour of an autumnal woodland and immediately pulled on my walking books to explore the forest down the road.
Who’s Cosy?
This wonderful, interactive book perfectly blends cosiness with the natural world as the narrator takes us around the landscape to see where animals are making themselves cosy as the season changes. It will inspire imaginations and encourage little ones to think about what the changing season means for local wildlife with empathy- gorgeous!
Robber Rabbit
I loved this beautiful picture book. The illustrations depict the beauty and abundance of the harvest season in glorious colour and detail, and the story tells of a greedy rabbit who must learn to share. Instead of building walls to keep others out, he learns that sharing what he is lucky to have is a much kinder idea. This book is a wonderful seasonal story but also an important story for our times.
No Way! I’ll Stay!
You will fall in love with stubborn Bird in this beautiful picture book. His bags are packed ready for his migration to Africa, but he just doesn’t want to leave. Autumn is beautiful and bountiful, why would he leave the bright leaves, the berries and grubs? As his friend Bear shows him that all the things he loves will have changed by Winter, this gentle story helps children to see how the seasons change. This is a lovely book about Autumn and migration, but also about dealing with change.
Nuts About You
This book would make a fabulous gift- its bright illustrations are littered with 3D highlights, and the text takes us on a journey of autumnal love. With Packed full of the main wildlife characters in our natural world, the tale helps children to forge a connection with the world outside at this time of year.
The Pumpkin Thief
I always enjoy Bird and Squirrel’s adventures and this one is no different- Bird has grown some pumpkins, but Squirrel doesn’t understand why they keep disappearing! This is a fun story for the Autumn season, which helps children to understand patience and the joy of giving.
